This could also be caused by a bad hooter valve (turbo bypass). Pull the vacuum hose off the intake manifold that runs down to the hooter valve and try and suck air through it. If you can - the valve is bad. My car exibited the same symptoms as you describe with a bad bypass valve. Once that is fixed - the other "slam up against a wall" symptom is the fuel pressure cut-off, which can be bypassed as described below. Good luck.
