You are probably right on with the distributor cap. I have had the rotor come off far enough to make contact with the plastic that holds the button in place in the cap. This can make the button stick and no longer make contact with the rotor. I doubt that you'd get spark at all if there were other ignition conponets that have failed. If this checks good and you still don't get spark, you'll probably have to do the whole ignition trouble shooting routine.
The fuel pump shouldn't run for more than a fuel seconds if the ECU wasn't getting an RPM signal. You can crack a line at the fuel rail, to make sure there is fuel pressure. Then while cranking use a long screwdriver or piece of hose to listen to the injectors, they should be clicking, they should also need an RPM signal to pulse. Plugs should be damp with fuel, if all is good here and you don't have spark at the plugs.
Hopefully it is the distributor cap, good luck.
