Hi,
My 1991 Turbo has intermittent hydraulic valve clatter (sounds like only 1 spring - not too much clatter, but sometimes it ticks louder than others - sometimes not at all). It comes and goes. Oil pressure is good. I perform oil changes way more often than necessary. The previous owner had the head gasket replaced, and her old mechanic indicated that he "may" have replaced the 1991 head with a swapped out head of earlier vintage that may have the oiler tubes.
A couple questions:
1.) How can I tell which head I have - early vs. later
2.) If it is one of the oiler lines that has lost it's o-ring, how long can a hydraulic lifter go without oil before it is permanently damaged? The PO's old mechanic said don't worry about the noise unless it really bothers me or becomes terrible... It's really bothering me!
3.) If it's more than just an oiler line problem, what kind of money generally would I be looking at to fix a hydraulic lifter problem?
4.) How much money does it cost to just replace the head with one like the Sweedish Dynamics "Blue" head? Has anyone experience with this product?
I wouldn't be able to do the work myself, so if anyone can ballpark average $$ costs for these scenario's, I'd appreciate it. In general, at what point should I just spend a few extra $$ and go for something like the Sweedish Dyanmics remanufactured head vs. paying someone to fiddle with hydraulic lifter issues? What million other things have to be replaced when you switch a head?
Any ideas? I know this is a ramble, so thanks in advance.
Gavin
