If you pull the valve cover, you will immediately know if you have the filler tubes. You will see a rack of tubing with little feeder tubes leading to the lifters. Dealers have a kit to replace all the o-rings.

If it's a newer system, the problem coud be due to a a clogged "lubrication bolt," but not as likely since you're not getting clatter up and down the line. A weak lifter can work OK almost indefinately...not perfect but OK. The advice to live with it is sound.

When you pull the valve cover, also replace the timing chain pad in the valve cover(a few bucks). There is a reasonable chance that your noise may be caused by a timing chain slap against the rubber pad that has become hard over time. Using a screwdriver stethoscope, did you find the noise loudest near the firewall?
