VW had gearbox trouble on the tranny for the 16V GTI's (I can't remember the # I think it ends in 020 though). I think this tranny is in the G60s but not the SLC's. Search for "Self Machining Tranny" or something. But VW trannies seem to be cheaper at salavage yards and to R and R than Saab trannies if you fall victim to this malady.
The SLC (VR6) is a great car. Fast, sturdy, and for-the-most-part well put together. My roomate had one and it was a blast to drive. However, he bought it with only 27K on it and the previous owner had managed to mess some stuff up seriously. Th sunroof leaked air, cooland leaked despite a water pump and a bunch of new hoses, and the AC didn't work. He ended up selling it and losing a bunch of money. So as with Saabs check maintanance records and maybe know your dealer's reputation. I wouldn't buy one from a Ford place.
As mentioned, I wouldn't bother with the G60 because of the G60 itself. Also, note, the fit and finish on VW's of this vintage late-80s, early 90s, is not what you're used to if you are driving a Saab. I was a life-long VW driver, Rabbit Convertibe, a couple of Jettas, GTI, and now I have an 89' 900S, it doesn't corner as well as the base Jetta, and it's not as quick, but both interior-wise and mechanically, the Saab feels like a classier act. Older VW fours rattle, buzz, and shake no matter how fast they are an no matter how quick third gear comes. I don't know about your budget, but if you can't afford an SLC then pick up a 2 litre 16V GTI. (1991 model year only I think). Around 140 HP and lighter than the Corrado, the SLC, and of course the SPG.
