Heat and insulation issues

I've certainly read with interest all the posts about the wiring beneath the console getting fried as a result of the heat generated by the cat convertor located just below that area. What I notice when I drive for any length of time is that even with a factory installed heat shield (the full length version), the console area becomes considerably hot. I especially notice it when I pull the key from the ignition lock and touch the metal. This tells me that the heat shield is only somewhat effective. I do know the wiring beneath the console is so far intact on this car, but I'd rather that area not be exposed to so much heat. The radiating heat from the console is also quite evident inside the car on warm days.
In a prior post I related how I'm going to use a combination of galvanized steel sheeting plus some extra hood insulation (the stiff padding material, not the eggshell foam) material to make a sandwich of sorts to better shield my starter/solenoid from the exhaust heat. Why not use the same concept to better shield the console area!? Even just the padding material cut to size and tucked beneath the console, or as a barrier between the heat shield and car floor would work. That's what I'll do. I'll post the results too.
