Thanks for the smile early this Monday morning.
You'll find a lot of techers on this board: some pilots, a bunch of engineers, some fine mechanics, and a lot of folks who have learned to be good mechanics through their own efforts and the experience of everybody else on SAABnet.
I fall into the second category, and there are days that it sure seems that it might be better to be a mechanic. I've been fooling with cars for a few decades and just haven't been afraid to take things apart. 99.9% of the time, I can get it back together, too :-). [I just found a picture of my much thinner and younger self in the wheel well of my lime-green '56 Chrysler after I'd taken out the 2-speed auto transmission to rebuild it. I got it back in and it worked well for another 25k miles - then it threw a rod. Oh, well.]
SAABs are such well-engineered cars and, with some exceptions, pretty straightforward to work on. Most of the maintenance tasks you can learn to do yourself.
Don't worry about asking questions on this board, there's usually someone who will talk you through a procedure and give you pointers on what to look for and things not to do.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any mechanics in Asheville that I could recommend.
Cheers
