Saab OG-900's are one of the few cars with a true, linear temperature gage, that will cycle up and down after warm-up, where most have a gage that sits in a single 'normal' position thru a wide range of operating temperatures. So the normal rise in temperature on the gage until the fans kick in, can be mistaken for a problem. The OG's fan control is just like most modern cars .... t-stat cracks open at 190F, and is near wide open at 10F higher temps, at which point the fans come on.
The Bentley repair manuals are great. They include description and location of cooling system components, and simple troubleshooting.
** NORMAL, HEALTHY OPERATION
(with OEM 87C T-stat, OEM 92C Fan-switch)
Cruising ..... Runs at 50% on gage (40% with 82C T-stat), warmed up and cruising for 3-5 minutes at 40-60 mph, with AC off. True even in 90F weather. Fans should NOT be needed cruising.
Stopped ..... In hot traffic, stop and go, or at long idle, gage slowly climbs to 2/3, when fans come on, bringing gage back to about 1/2 before shutting off. This is a NORMAL cycle of the system, not a hot problem. In very cold weather, fan trip point will be a little higher on gage (3/4) than in warm weather (due to more free convection cooling of the radiator, and location of fan switch).
** ACTUAL GAGE TEMPERATURES
I tested my gage using and infared sensor off the t-stat housing:
gap between gr and red = 235F
99% 230F (top of green)
88% 220F
75% 210F (fans turn on, winter)
67% 200F (fans turn on, summer)
50% 190F (fans shut off, t-stat opens)
40% 180F (82C T-stat opens)
