Then it ain't a turbo anymore!!! The car cannot possibly run well; it should run slower than an 8 valve N/A car. This is easily fixed, though.
The 86 is an oil cooled turbo, and one can be had pretty cheaply. Call any Saab shop, or check out the parts classifieds (particularly the Viking Automotive ad, I know they've got an oil cooled turbocharger you can pick up for a good price)
As far as reverse, well, that's just an damn expensive repair. I would not recommend doing this yourself; chances are, it will cost you more than the car is worth unless the body is in great shape as is the interior. You might be able to get away without a complete tranny rebuild.
Regardless, it is free. If the body sucks, and it's got a ton of miles on it, then part it out. There are plenty of that fish in the sea. By parting it out, you will continue it's life in a more productive fashion, and you will help your fellow Saabers do the same for their cars needing parts. If you can, get the car to a mechanic, have them check it out to tell you if it is worth repairing or not. This will cost you about $50, but might save you thousands of dollars and many many hours of anguish over countless lost hours of time spent working on a possible "pile."
