Well, after disassembly and thorough cleaning, I brought the primary
case (w/ the hole in it) to my machinist friend's shop. I shaped
a couple of pieces of aluminum to make a cover, and he TIG welded it up for
me. A fun little project in itself. It looks great (to my economising eyes),
although it's now covered w/ glass bead (sandblasting) dust : lots of
cleaning to be done ! I've ordered a set of seals and a pinon bearing and
look forward to reassembly (perhaps) this weekend.

GregD mentioned the issue of whether the case is drilled for "centering".
I'm a little unsure of what this means. I seem to recall (parts not with
me right now) that there were springs on the output shaft that kept the
syncro sleeves centerred between, say, 3 & 4. Is this what is being
referred to ? Not having a "before and after" shot handy, it's hard to
know if my '85 tranny has it.

BTW, my '88 900 base has a decent tranny in it, but my plan is to put that
engine/tranny into the '85 body and sell it (to help fund this hobby). I'll
probably drop the rebuilt '85 engine/tranny back into the '85 body at
first for initial testing/confidence building; that way I can still get
to work if I need to !
