Some Tranny Questions...

Okay,
A question or two about the tranny. This one is from an '85
16V turbo w/ 165k mi. The previous owner reported no problems at all
(except for that huge gash in the casing, see prior post!). I've got
it pulled and partly disassembled and there seems to be no damage to
the gears at all. The gash was in the chamber that holds the input
pinion and 5th gear selector. My plan is to either find a replacement
for this part, or (with the aid of a machinist friend) heli-arc weld a
patch over the gash area.
Q1 : Does that part (the "primary casing" ?) vary from '85 to other
years ?
Q2 : aside from replacing the output pinion bearing, is there anything
in particular that should be done at this time ? The output pinion
gear itself doesn't look worn, and the owner said the car never popped
out of gear on her. My plan is to just reassemble it with new gaskets
and seals, keep all the shims and such exactly as before, and hope for
many more miles. Does this seem reasonble ?
TIA,
Jeff
