Some Engine Questions...

A coupla questions about the engine. I pulled this one from an '85
turbo 16V. There were a few ominous signs along the way : 1) the
starter wouldn't turn over. 2) With the plugs removed, I couldn't
turn the crankshaft. 3) Now, even with the cylinder head off and the
clutch shaft and timing chain removed, I can't get the pistons to
budge. This is on a car that was reportedly working fine until it got
driven onto a rock (hit the tranny).
Q1 : Did I destroy the starter by trying to crank a seized engine ?
Q2 : Is it safe to just apply 12V to an unloaded (removed from
the engine) starter ? I mean, can the starter handle this kind of
testing ?
Q3 : Any idea what caused the engine to seize ? The accident involved
the underside casing of the tranny. The gears inside the tranny were
absolutely unharmed and turn smoothly and easily by hand. I'm baffled.
(BTW, I haven't yet separated the engine from the tranny. I'll get to
it when it's light again.)
Q4 : Whatever the cause of the seizing, is this engine out of the
question for a rebuild ? My plan is/was to check the tolerances and
(if okay) replace the rings and (if needed) bearings. Not to mention
work on the head. Do seized up blocks ever come back from the dead ?
Thanks,
Jeff
