Well, a little progress. I noticed a little bit of kibble in
the oil pan. One piece looked decidedly like a sprocket tooth.
So I was thinking maybe the timing spocket or oil pump bit it.
As I tried to break the crankshaft nut (the one holding the pulley on),
the crankshaft began to turn over (inconvenient, but welcome news).
The oil pump gears look great (haven't checked them for specs, but
visually they're all okay.) Then I got to the lower timing sprocket,
and, well, it looks pretty darn good, except for one tooth missing !

I'm not sure just how easily the crankshaft should turn, but if I hold
onto the bolts that used to hold the flywheel on (about 6" diameter
pattern) I can't turn it over, but if I use a wrench or bar stuck
between these bolts I can. I'm guessing this is about right.

So why wouldn't it turn over previously ? Well, I don't *need* to know,
but just to sort of ponder :

* I don't think it was related to the chipped tooth on the timing
sprocket. When I pulled the timing cover, the chain was seated properly
on the sprocket. Doesn't seem like the one missing tooth could make a difference, especially since the missing material was in the oil pan.

* Did I not crank hard enough ? I broke both camshaft sprocket bolts loose
w/ no means of holding the crankshaft in place. I then twisted w/ both
hands on the flywheel and couldn't get it to budge. Maybe if I had just
tried really wailing on it...

* One screwy thing was that I forgot to do the little trick of inserting a
spacer in the clutch leaf springs prior to removing/draining the clutch
line. So I still had the slave cylinder in place. But the primary gear
cover was off and the (hmm, what to call it) primary drive chain (?) was removed, as was the clutch shaft. So (if I understand this) the crank+flywheel+frition plate+pressure plate *should* have been free to
rotate, no ?

I guess we'll never know for sure, but I' glad to have a block to work
with. I'll start checking specs soon.

About the starter : Glad to hear I didn't toast it. I'll tickle it
w/ 12 volts and see if it's any good.

Jeff
