My 86 900T was the same - probably a bit more advanced. I always grimaced when my wife would say to friends as we talked "cars" that "yeah it's a neat car to drive, but it's rusted out and 15 years old..."
She really knows how to cut a guy off at the knees. That one bubbly area at the apex of the passenger arch was the ONLY rust on the friggin' car - yet that meant it was a 15-year-old piece of crap. Oh well, we still get along .....
Anyway, I solved my prob w/ a 100.00$ parts car, same color as mine, and the help of a sawzall (w/ the AXE blade)- as well as a buddy who's rather creative w/ welding & fabrication.
1. sawzall'ed off the good fender from way back, to have good overlap.
2. same to my car - but more careful this time.
3. grinding, custom fitting, bending, not too bad - temporary rivet or two.
4. expert welding in/out along seam.
5. voila'! NOW tell me the car is a rustbucket...
You can do this pretty much only if you're a welder or have welding buddies. But it's not too tuff, and looks like it'll last longer than I will!
