Basic Tuneup Advice(long)

Hi,
First off, I have no experience with cars (other than oil change) but will be happy to learn to maintain my old Saab. I was a Honda driver before my 900 base saab. The Honda, I got frequent oil changes but only took in to shop maybe once a year for a basic tune-up (spark plugs, etc...) or if something was wrong. I've noticed my Saab has been a little sluggish lately and I have to apply more acceleration up hills etc...
It's been many months since my 900 has had any type of service except for regular oil change, and AT fluid change. The service manual gives insight on mileage up to 120k (I think) but their service for 120K is pretty in depth. My car is at about 135k miles. I don't want to take it to the shop and spend $400 for a service that is not really necessary. I just bought a bentley manual and just want to do "typical" service on a car with my mileage to prolong the life.
I'm just wondering how often everyone here does a tune-up on their car and what this entails? What is a good routine/schedule for a car with over 135k? What would a Saab indie shop charge for the same service? thanks everyone.
