Don't know what an indie shop would charge for a major tune-up cuz I'm too much of a cheap bas@%rd to have them do really easy stuff I can do myself.
First thing to do is buy a Bentley manual. This is the only book to buy (don't get a Haynes) and will run you $45-50. Here on Saabnet, go to the sponsor page and give one of 'em a call. Also available from behemoth online booksellers. You'll find all the info you need in the book; it is an invaluable resource. Questions? Post them here. Also, *search* the board and its archives - it's often like mining: you go through thread after thread after thread, and then, finally, the exact answer you need pops up on your screen. Frickin' miracle of the internet :-)
For tune-up, here's some info I've picked up here:
*Use NGK spark plugs only
*Use Bosch distributor cap/rotor, and fuel filter
*Use Bougicord (or Magnacore) plug wires (change them one at a time!)
*Use good quality oil filters (Mann from Germany are OEM, about $4.25 ea.) Avoid cheap ones from the local parts store, which have cardboard elements that fail...
*Flush your cooling system every 2 years max. Many people say to use Mercedes coolant or Texaco Dexcool, but I think what's more important is that you a.)use a flushing product (Prestone, et al); b.) use distilled water after flushing; c.) stick to your maintenance schedule.
*As a preventative measure, replace your thermostat. Use a Saab thermostat only, which is apparently designed differently than most.
*Power steering and brake fluid should be changed. I've not done these myself, but from what I've read here, they're not too difficult. Power steering may be a bit messy, and brake fluid requires either two people, or some inexpensive special tools.
*Replace all your vacuum lines - at least the ones under the hood. Some say get silicone lines, but rubber is fine, and cheaper too. Saab turbos are notorious for vacuum leaks (may be the cause of your car's sluggishness, btw - check the hoses near your oil filter - cheap-o oil change places often knock the hoses off their attachments).
I don't know anything about auto tranny's, but someone will surely clue you in to their regular maintenance.
Last, this is by no means complete. Others, and the Bentley, will get you fully up on things.
Good luck, and have fun...
