the connection wasn't clean, and had a resistance which generated heat. To avoid this, squirt a bunch of electrical contact cleaner into the connectors, and seal them up with dielectric grease.
I'll admit that a beefed-up wiring harness with heavy-duty relays is the way to go, and I plan to do exactly that eventually (so that I can run 130/100w bulbs...)
