Yep, I used my brothers gun, which he paid about $70 for. If I had it to do over again, I would use my own gun, and one with a wider paint path or stroke. This would minimize the lines where the overlap is. Also, I used ok quality paint, $150 for a gallon including reducer and hardener (Dupont Centauri). The air compressor I rented, a 125 psi model and I made sure to get the moisure out.
What I really screwed up on was just the motion of the spray gun over the car. I could make it look incredible and shiny like a mirror, but wherever I painted there was a fuzzy border where the paint went on dry / not thick enough to be glossy. Also, I spent about an hour an a half getting the damn compressor to run. It would run for about 5 seconds and shut out. Turns out the extension cords I was using, though garage-tuff, did not have high enough amperage and I ended up having to grab a 10 foot long really thick cord from my basement work area to handle the amps. That meant that I could not get all the way around the car (parked in yard, wouldnt reach!!!) to paint the far side (drivers side). Ugh. Next time I am going to pay a pro or try something that requires a bit less skill. Some parts of the car look awesome, but the overall paint job is so patchy that it doesnt look too hot.
