Doubt it's your knock sensor, but you can test it by idling the engine, then tapping on the sensor gently with, say, a socket extension (sensor's located on your intake manifold, kinda buried beneath piping with wiring attached). If it works, the APC solenoid will "clack" in response to the tapping. You can see the knock sensor working when the boost needle "twitches" back at full boost - this is the sensor "telling" your APC that the motor is knocking. The APC, in turn, has "told" your APC solenoid to bleed some boost by opening the wastegate a bit.
Have you looked over your vac. hoses? I've had leaks in the past that were worst in lower gears, & somehow better in 5th. What mods have you done?
