On Friday I had my 89 900 16v n/a at a trusted mechanic (not a Saab spec) to replace the header pipe. The end that mates w/the cat has gone bad (old, rusted) and is leaking/making big noise.
When I came to pick up, found out that
A) He had ordered the wrong header pipe, so he had put my old one back on, although with new gaskets where it joins the manifold. Managed to fix the noisey exhaust leak for now, but it won't last.
B) In the process, my tailpipe had snapped off of my exhaust right where it joins the muffler. This happened while it was unsupported for a period of time and not attached to the car.
The tail pipe is pratically new, looks great, but there was rusting on the muffler "nipple". He showed me where, felt that it would have given way sooner than later anyway.
C) My check engine light is now on - this could be either because the O2 sensor wasn't hooked back up to the header pipe correctly/at all, or could it be from the smoke from the burning grease he applied to the header pipe gasket where it joins the manifold? This has mostly burned off, but it was smoking like a mofuh when I got it home from the across town drive from the shop.
The correct header pipe is on order... will be in next week.
QUESTIONS: I get the impression he doesn't intend to charge me for all the the muffler cost - my question is, do you all feel I should be charged at all for this?
ALSO - is this something that, now that the mech has gotten half the prep work done I should try to tackle myself - need to remove old/install new header pipe, new muffler, have basic tools and ramps to elevate the car.
Ordinarily I wouldn't have a second thought about this mech - I've gone to him for 8 plus yrs and trusted him with my domestic cars, and he's been honest enough to tell me that replacing my 900's steering rack is not something he can tackle.
Any thoughts, opinions on this rambling saga of mine?
