I recently replaced (myself) the entire exhaust sytem (82T) because it basically fell off the car. The pipe that connects the cat to the muffler cracked off from rust. I literally had it wired to the muffler so it wouldn't hang. I drove that way for over a week until the new parts arrived! Also, the tailpipe from muffler to rear of car had rusted through with several holes. The only pieces that were good were the header to cat pipe and the cat. Even then I had to replace two of three inset bolts in the connecting flange. Then since my car is a turbo, there is a metal bracket which connects to the gearbox and clamps onto the downpipe. It not only holds the downpipe firmly in place, but essentially keeps the entire exhaust system locked into position so that the muffler and catalytic convertor don't sway back and forth excessively from lateral movement. A very important piece. I discovered that one of the two bracket bolts was missing, and the one remaining had taken on so much stress that it had cracked the metal "nipple" where it threaded into the casing. I had to find two replacement bolts, one longer to screw past the damaged nipple threading. So far the entire system is holding up just fine. A lot of painful messy work when you have to work from beneath the car on ramps. If you have the money and trust your mechanic, let him do it. If you enjoy a DIY challenge and have the tools, go for it.
