I've read all the postings I could find on troubleshooting a rise in the temp guage (it seems Kevin K and Ari are the two to talk with here). Here's my situation, any help and advice is TOTALLY appreciated.
I drive an 86 (135K miles) 900 turbo.
I recently took the car out west from Southern New Jersey for the summer. Everything ran smooth until I got into the up grades of Denver, CO and I noticed the temp guage rising. I pulled over, shut her down, and popped the hood to find coolant bubbling out of the resivour. I found a saab mechanic and they replaced the thermostat, fan switch, and res. cap., but did not flush the system. I was under way again. That was six weeks ago, and everything has been okay while driving "around town".
Today I was driving the same stretch of road outside Denver, along with some other long, steep inclines at highway rpm/speeds. I noticed the temp. needle dancing between 1/2 and slightly ABOVE 3/4 on inclines. I turned on the heater, full blast, and it corrected the temp only slightly. I also noticed that the temp. would fall slightly on a down grade. Once the sun went down (it was 96 in Denver today) the needle did not "dance" as much.
I'm heading back east in a week, and I'd like to settle my mind on this issue as soon as possible (and especially NOT while traveling through corn fields).
My questions:
Do I need a radiator?
*If so, is this something an aspiring DIYer can handle myself or should I shell out more $$$ for another mechanic to straighten me out?
*If not, what is my problem?
What exactly is "reconditioning" a radiator?
If you've actually read this entire post, I really appreciate that alone.
