900 gearbox questions

Our 900 is a 92. Well maintained by trusted and competent mechanics . At 100k or so, 1st gear began to pop out intermittently. It’s now at 120k and the frequency has increased to the point of repair or dump. Our current mechanic (on the Saabnet list) has shimed in an effort to help, but it hasn’t lasted. He estimates $1k to repair. I’ve just dropped it at the local dealer.
Our other car is an 85 Celica GT with 110k. It has only had normal maint problems. Oil, exhaust, battery and most recently a clutch after 9 years and 50k stop and go miles.
I’m a little very disappointed that the gearbox in the Saab is gone . I expect that from other cars.
I note that on the message board there are a fair amount of posts RE: gearbox repairing in 900s. Is this a common problem with these cars or this year?
We’re looking at buying a new wagon. Although the Saab has performed very well over time, the gearbox failure at 100k bothers me. It doesn’t make me feel confident of a new Saab, although the reviews are very favorable, especially for the 9-5 wagon we may be interested in.
I’d welcome some feedback as to the existing problem and it’s history as well as whatever is known about the 9-5 wagon and it’s “predicted” reliablity, especially in tranny land. Thanks,
Fritz
