I believe that as the motor twists to the passenger side when you hit the gas or let the clutch out, it pulls on the shift linkage. Then it twists back when you let off the gas. Hit a big bump and the engine moves on its mounts due to worn rubber bushings.
Look on the underside of your hood, if you see abrasions on the heat pad from engine contact, or shiny spots on the upper radiator hose, then you can tell that the engine is twisting in its deteriorated mounts.
Replacing the front mount alone is the cheapest bang for the buck in making these cars ride like new. I did ball joints and tie rod ends at the same time and the ride was vastly improved. The wheels don't fall into the holes or bumps due to slack in the joints, and the engine doesn't bounce around from the bumps. Another hint: do you, as I did, have trouble keeping your exhaust system from loosening up or hitting the body? same cause.
Let us know.
