Hi All,
I cleaned out my glove box and did an informal study on the cost of driving my Saab based on receipts. It's an 89' 900S with 106K. I've had it for almost 4 years, averaged 10K a year, and spent around an average of $125 a month keeping it on the road factoring in depreciation and my purchase price as well. My insurance is $35 a month for comprehensive! I've had some work done at the dealer=rip off in a pinch, and I've had a buddy cut me a break on a lot of stuff the last couple years. My other options? I could be leasing a Ford Focus, a base Civic, or a Hyundai and with insurance on those vehicles they'd still be a bit more expensive that the Saab.
I'm looking into doing a PhD in a city with good public transport and going carless next year because the Saab has spoiled me and I don't think I feel like driving anything else that I can afford at this point.
But for now I'm keeping my ATF clean, learning to roll up my sleeves nd get dirty, and crossing my fingers.
The last new vehicle that I test drove was a Golf Turbo Deisel. It was quick and tight, but in terms of fit and finish I was happy to get back in my car. The Saab just felt better. My mom's got a new Jetta and after sitting in it for a couple of hours last Christmas I was wishing for my Saab's seats. I think the ergonomics are one of the big things that keep us driving 900s.
