My mountain bike (KHS montana FZ, vintage '95?) is constantly begging for mechanical attention- most likely due to jealousy of the treatment my car ('86 SPG, 198,000 miles) gets. On sunday, I got a flat less than a mile into a ride because the valve stem seperated from the tube! Thankfully, I had a spare tube with me. Later, my rear skewer (which replaced the origional last summer) finally stripped its threads enough to make the bike unridable. Rats.

On tuesday, transmission problems- the front derailler didn't want to snap into the granny gear any more, making climbing a miserable chore. This contributed to an extremely low fuel (and coolant) situation, and I was forced into "limp home" mode.

My motor has the same cold start problems as Ari's, and consistently overheats when the weather is over 80 degrees. The driver's seat leather is cracking and falling apart, and the rims get banged up quicker than a Viggen's. Parts prices are approximately the same as my SAAB, and far less durable. Cargo capacity sucks. The suspension (elastomer rock shox) is mercilessly harsh, and costs more to rebuild than I origionally paid for it. The cruise control has always been flaky, and the exhaust sounds and smells horrible.

However, like my SAAB, it's a love/hate relationship where the love far outweighs the hate. On tuesday I managed to do a barrel roll down a hill with my feet still in the pedals. I stood up and drove away, a little scratched but still good to go for many more miles to come.

If only my car could bunny-hop potholes and road debris, and climb up and down stairs...
