When does it overheat - while driving down the highway, or only in traffic? Is the AC on?
Of course, start with the simple stuff - is there coolant? Let the car idle, with the AC OFF. As the temperature gauge creeps up, do the radiator fans come on?
If you overheat both cruising down the highway and in traffic, I'd suspect the thermostat first. A bad/sticky thermostat will cause problems quick. Next would be a clogged radiator, but replace the thermostat first - it's cheap and quick.
If it only overheats in stop-and-go traffic, see if the radiator fans run. They should run when the temperature gauge goes near, but not into, the red. This can be confusing, because running the AC also makes the fans run. The fans provide airflow when the car isn't moving, and they come on based on the temperature of the radiator. If the fans don't come on when the gauge gets high, jumper across the fan switch (bolted into the radiator). If the fan doesn't come on, then start checking the fuses, fans, and fan relays.
So - here are some questions -
Does it overheat on the highway? (thermostat, clogged radiator)
Overheat in traffic?
When you start the car, does the temp gauge just go up to the red in a matter of 5 or 10 minutes, or does it go up to about half-way (9:00)and stay there fore a while, then work it's way up to the red. If it shoots right up, assume stuck thermostat. If it hangs around 9 for a while then creeps up, the thermostat is probably OK.
Good luck
