Unless you have modified your engine to produce a lot more power than stock the standard setup is not really restrictive. You will 'NOT' reduce fuel consumption but if the original element is very dirty and not a proper Saab OE one then you may get a biy more power top end - and I mean a 'bit'. I prefer the open cone straight on to the AMM as it removes the restrictive pipwork into the airbox ( I'm running with APC and exhaust mods) People often say this is bad because you are sucking in hot air from around the engine - this is true if the car is sitting still - once on the move there is plenty of air getting in from the outside. The danger of picking up water is about the same as it is from the stock setup - it's the same height! The other benefits to the cone setup is you instantly have more space on that side of the engine - very easy to get at the oil filter and by removing the airbox from behind the IC you will get better airflow through it and have the space to put a dedicated fan on it for even better IC efficiency.
