Is it the valves or the chain? - a noisey chain can sometimes be due to the old style tensioner getting slack - the new ones have a small offset bolt set into the larger one ( what year is your car). Replace this and at the same time check the amount of extension of the plunger which indicates the amount of wear in the chain (11mm between inner faces is the limit) if it's over this you may want to think about getting a new chain, guides and sprocket set - expensive as it's engine out. If this is OK (and pray it is)
run some flushing oil through the system at next oil change - not the additive - but the type where you replace the oil and let it tick over at fast idle for a while - you will be amazed at what comes out! I wouldn't bother to change oils - Mobil 1 is about as good as it gets but make sure you use a good filter - some cheap ones don't have a valve in them and can let the oil drain out when you stop the engine which causes brief starvation of oil and hence noise on start up. If still no joy - get the cam cover off and test the hydraulic lifters - use a blunt screwdriver and try to lever each one down - they should feel nice and stiff with only the spring tension - if they 'squash' they are bad and need replacing - not a major job. My 91T16 came with a FSH and rattled on every start up from cold - a diet of Mobil 1 (0w-40 is the UK spec) following a thourough engine flush and it starts as quite cold as when it's hot.
