Finally did a major upgrade on the sound system two weeks. I decided on an all purpose mid-priced unit from Pioneer with ample power for the four 50 watt speakers I have front and rear, plus a good tuner with plenty of presets. Very pleased was I... for the first day. I knew it could be better. I had a 100 watt amp from a previous sytem that I decided would work nicely with a pair of all purpose 8" woofers set in the trunk, using the additional rear RCA low output connections on the back of the tuner as the source. Yes, an improvement in the low end, but not quite enough. So I moved them beneath the rear seat where there happens to be two convenient recesses on each side behind where your feet sit. Now that I could hear them better, they sounded underpowered and a bit distorted. Hmmm, need a bigger amp. So I did some shopping around and found (Pep Boys again) a really nice, low distortion, bridgeable 300 watt amp used mostly for subwoofers. The best part - sold at the reduced price of only $75. Alas, none in the store aside from the display model. I drove to another location to find no amp there either. Only the display model. I asked where there might be another PB location to get that amp and was told it had been discontinued! Double F me! I ended up convincing the store manager to let me have the unit screwed securely into the display wall! With no box or directions I walked out the door with that amp bulging inside a plastic bag. I drove a bit and parked beneath a streetlight and within 10 minutes had it installed right then and there! I drove on to an appointment with a big new deep sound. I LOVE it! BUT, I know I can do better. What if I remove the stock 4x10 50 watt rear dash speakers, install in their place the 8" woofers coupled with simple crossovers and tweeters, then get one big 12" subwoofer and have the 300 watt amp power that bad boy? And if there's room I could put the stock 4x10's in the front door panels...
