I bought the Pioneer DEH 2300 with the removable face plate - very necessary around Los Angeles when you have no theft prevention system other than awareness. Quite clean sounding and a very good tuner. Took a look at the door panels this morning to see if the 4x10's would fit - no room. But, they might fit beneath the lower dash somehow...
As far as how they sound now in their stock location? Yes, they are not equiped for a big low end sound, nor do they have a great high end, but they can put out a solid even toned volume if you don't ask for too much bass. So here's how I adjusted the sound last night. Via the Pioneer head EQ I lowered the overall bass signal sent to the front and rear. On the sub amp I have a range of settings, including volume, bass boost and a crossover range adjustment. With the unit sending only signals 250hz and lower, plus bass boost set on, and the volume set to 3/4, it more than compensates for the lowered bass signal sent elsewhere. The result is a bigger sound with less distortion at any volume level. I now drive around thinking I have a drummer sitting behind me using the back of my seat as a bass drum! Sends shivers up your spine at times.

The other funny thing is that I don't even have housings for the two 8" woofers. They're just propped against the carpet in the chassis recess beneath the rear seat. If I put my mind to it, and if I don't move them to the rear dash, I know I could come up with some homemade form fit housing to both protect them against puncture, plus provide additional bass response.

Another curious observation - the CDs I burned using 70's and 80's vintage analog vinyl as the source often sound far better on my system than some of the all digital CDs from the 90's! The all digital CD's often have an uneven bass response (sometimes too much, sometimes too little, and not always at the right times), whereas the vinyl sourced CD's are smooth, even and clean. Could just be my subjective preference reacting to familiar music.
