Wow is my ISP ever s l o w today. Anyway, the advise so far about adjusting the tension spring is right on, but that only applies to an easy shift into 3rd and fourth gears. That whole spring unit is designed so that the gear shift will always line up with 3rd and 4th when not putting lateral pressure on it, like when going into 1, 2, 5 or R. Sort of a dummy proof way of ensuring that we don't shift into 1st or 2nd when we want 3rd or 4th. An unexpected slowing of the car when accidentally downshifting is obviously dangerous.
As for the key having a problem trying to remove it: Could be that your ignition mechanism is gummed up. Spill any drinks in there over the years? I had a horribly stiff ignition when I first bought my used 82. No lubricant would work. So I dismantled it and cleaned out nearly 20 years of dirt and solids from it and it now works as good as new. Short of a dismantling, you might just want to drip some solvent in there and turn the key back and forth a few times. Acetone, lighter fluid, paint thinner, kerosene... If that doesn't help, then perhaps a piece of metal has broken off and lodged in there. There is a wire spring which may have come loose and found it's way to a place where it shouldn't be.
As far as difficulty shifting into 1st and 5th - that's an unknown for me. That could be clutch related though.
