You can chew up a clutch in 10K miles if you do a lot of stop and go driving, and aren't very good with a clutch. Please take no offense, but clutch technique is the biggest part of clutch wear. I've known folks that could kill a clutch in 5K miles. I also know of cars with 200K on the original clutch.
The good news is that replacing a clutch on a classic 900 is simplicity itself. There is no need to drop the transmission or pull the engine, like in may other FWD cars. You just remove the cover, pull a driveshaft, remove the old clutch plate, install a new one. It can be done with hand tools in a few hours - a decent Saab mechanic can do it in less than an hour.
The timing chain should last the life of the car (over 200K miles) with regular (3-5K) oil and filter changes. Yes, some chains fail sooner, and some will run longer. But it's reasonable to expect the chain to last to 200K.
As an example, my '86 900T was on the original clutch and timing chain at 162K miles (died in an accident). Yes, many of those where highway miles, but there was plenty of (spirited) in-town driving.
In my other present Saabs (all automatics), both cars are in the 140-150K mile range, all with originall timing chains, and with minimal chain wear (from recent inspections).
