I’ve recently had my Speedometer fixed and thought I would pass on my experience in hopes it might assist others.
I had the classic symptom…speedometer works but the odometer does not register. I removed the cluster and tried to figure out how to dismantle the unit. I had the benefit of having a parts car so I could tear apart another unit, which is what I did. The problem with trying to fix it yourself is twofold:
1. It is very difficult to remove the needle, which you must do to remove the face.
2. After you remove the needle you must have a calibration unit to install the needle in the right place.
So, after much head scratching, I found a Speedometer shop right down the road on the old Route 66 in Southern California. I took it to that shop and it was rebuilt by a man who seemed to know exactly what to do before he even took the unit apart.
Some of the trivia I learned about the speedometer:
What does W=1,008 mean? That is used for calibration. It means that there are 1,008 revolutions per mile. Older Saabs use 1008, newer ones use 1050. The difference is only 2 mph at 60 mph. To calibrate the speedometer the technician sets his source at 1008 RPM (or 1050 rpm) and then attaches the needle to indicate 60 mph. There have been several statements that indicated that the speedometer is different from automatics to manual Saabs, but I don’t agree. They appear to be the same. This Saab was converted from an automatic to a manual.
The speedometer and odometer are not tied together in any way. The only thing they share is the drive cable. The Speedometer can be calibrated, but the odometer reading is fixed by gear ratios and can’t be adjusted.
There has been lots of discussion about plastic gears, and these seem to be the Achilles heal of the unit. They age and fail or spin on the shaft.
The shop I used was great, and I would highly recommend it. They charged $60 to rebuild the unit out of the car, and guarantee it for 6 months. I’m very happy with the performance of the rebuild.
