I can't think of a decelerate rattle from the gearbox, other than a loading effect on the pinion gear. You could do the same by simply going downhill with the throttle closed. That would 'reverse load' the pinion gear, and you'd also have minimum boost from the turbo - your boost gauge will be in the white (vacuum). But the turbo will still spin a little.
What is the sound, and when? If you're boosting hard, then let off the gas and you hear a strange sound, it may be the 'hooter' valve (turbo bypass valve). If the hooter valve is bad, you will get some strange sounds as the high pressure builds up on the closed throttle plate.
