Well, you don't want to lug the engine (drive with it below around 1500 RPM - not under 2,000 RPM is better for normal driving.) Shift points are subject to debate. I usually shift somewhere between 3,500 RPM and 5,000 RPM, depending on what I need for acceleration. You don't want to drop it into 2nd to decelerate. Brake pads are much cheaper than transmissions.
In shifting, you want to remember that the transmission (specifically the bearing that supports the pinion gear) is the weak part of the car

They're great. I wanted a 900 since I first saw one in the early '80s.
