in my '88. The passenger side failed, but in the closed mode. Any passenger wanting in or out of the seat had to duck under. Which says to me it never was a safe application.
I never did retro-fit the belts before selling the car, although I did buy a set of "normal" belts to do the work. (I've since sold the set...)
I'm definitely with KeithG on this. You can, and quite franky SHOULD retrofit the car with regular seat belts.
