The passive, or automatic, belts first appeared on US-market 1987 900S 3- doors. In 1988, they spread like a plague to 3-door S, turbos, and SPGs. They are on every 1989 SPG I have ever seen, as well as other 3-door models (mostly turbos, unfortunately) that year. In 1990, the US market 900 got SRS (airbag)...no more "moron" belts! Wahoo!!!
I have converted several 3-doors to regular belts, by the way. Best time for this conversion is when you need a headliner. They are different too!
I have never seen an '87 SPG w/ automatic belts. I have heard of some '88 SPGs w/ the junk, but I've never seen one. As I said, every '89 SPG I have ever seen has had them. I love SPGs, but I do not love those seatbelts!
Hope this helps.
