Okay, so I'm on my way back up to school today (a 350+ mile trip) and I'm cruising down the highway at 75. I had been driving for a while before I got to the highway (35 minutes) and so the car was already warmed up. I go and turn on the cruise control and set it. Only it doesn't set, it just keeps going faster and faster. Finally, at 80 mph, I hit the brakes to turn it off. This happens several more times as I retry setting the speed, try turning it off first, etc. Then, I sort of double-hit the cruise speed set button and it finally the car holds speed. Then, about 15-20 minutes later, it just suddenly starts accelerating on me again--you have no idea how unnerving this is! So, I hit the brakes and go through the whole rigamarole again. And again. Finally, at about 2 hours into my 5 1/2 hour trip, the cruise control begins behaving normally again and gives me no problems for the remaining duration of the trip. What's going on here?!
I have two more things to note about the cruise control:
1. When the car was doing this weird behavior, the resume button wouldn't work. Even if I managed to get the speed to stay, if I had to brake and tried to resume my speed, it would just stay at the speed I was currently going (ie if I was going 75, hit the brakes for a slower driver, slowed to 65, and the hit resume, I was stuck at 65.) I could, of course, use the accelerator to speed up again, but this was a little perturbing.
2. This is the first time I've had this happen, but I have had the cruise control not want to turn off. I've been using it and then turn it off, only to have the cruise light blink off and then back on, and have the car take off with me. This only has happened a few times and was remedied by turning the cruise back on and off again. Something tells me there's something wrong with my blinker/cruise stalk.... any ideas???
Thanks for the help,
Tim B.
