87TC drivetrain noises, could it be....

Test driving an 87 5spd. 900TC. The car has 149K on the clock. When accelerating up from dead start, the car emits an audible noise which increases proportionally to vehicle speed.
The noise started out as a deep pitched WUMP WUMP WUMP, and increased up till about 45 mph, where it almost goes away. Definitely drivetrain, since once clutch is in & RPM drops to idle, noise remains.
Owner says he believes it is tires. I think more likely wheel bearing or pinion bearings, differential? He claims it goes away with warmup, but I did not hear it leaving during test drive. Did a quick "slalom" test and it had no noticeable change to the noise.
Opinions? FWIW car has only been driven about 4K in last 4 years, and is fitted with 205-60R15 rubber.
