I had that happen on an '85 900T once. I bought the car in that condition - not only was the nut missing but the bolt was gone too. No idea how long the P.O. drove the car like that!
I used some JB Weld - just a dab - to secure it back to the body and fitted everything back together. No problem with that fix. From a safety standpoint, there is ultimately little reason that nut needs to be fixed to the body. It's probably just a convenience on the assembly line.
