It's clear they charged you list for replacing an entire abs hydraulic master cylinder unit, and it's true they're not cheap.
However, you shouldn't have swerving all over the road when you dynamite the brakes (and you need to hit the brakes hard to get full braking, even with abs...abs will kick in on the rear brakes long before the front brakes have reached max braking torque!)
I suspect you have other suspension and alignment if not a front wheel bearing problem that is causing the swerving. I had a problem for several years on braking with my 87 900T; back end would lock up (it seemed) first and try to come around. I essentially rebuilt the entire suspension and eventually ended up replacing the left front wheel bearing (little noisy, but still serviceable...it 'clunked' when turning left or right, one clunk, not crunk-crunk-crunk which is CV joint) and when I got it back from alignment, the tendency for the rear to come around when braking was gone.
Another issue is tires...bad or old (hardened, 4-5 years old is about max) tires will skid a lot easier than new ones. And some tires are just poison on Saabs; I prefer a stiffer sidewall tire at least 60-series H-rated and preferably V-rated. OTOH, you do what you have to do with winter tires...my Yoko Graspics are positively squirmy, but they do well on snow!
