There are a lot of abused Saabs out there. More often than not, when I've test driven used Saabs, the reverse lockout has been jammed or broken. Lots of ham fisted used car salesmen who haven't been enlightened about how to remove the key!
My current driver ('91 900) is one such car. The shifter was broken. Coolant ran down onto the floor mats. Oil leaked from the head gasket. Local auto store no-brand tires adorned the wheels. Ball joints squeaked. Oh yeah, and the clutch barely provided enough action to put it into first gear. But the car was clean inside, and records showed its owner paid attention to it for the first 8 years. That last year, however, she did nothing but flog it!
So I bought it for $1000, put about $1000 in parts into it, and it runs beautifully. The good thing about Saabs is that they are inherently strong cars, and can come back to life fairly easily.
