Well, I'm beginning the battle with perhaps the greatest foe Saabs in the Northeast ever see (besides perhaps deer): rust. Especially here in Maine where they liberally apply the road salt during the winter, rust is a problem, and lo and behold, mine has it. I actually bought it that way, and now I'm looking for good ways to stop it. The sites of the rust is along the front part of the curve around the wheel cavity on the front fender,, near the "Saab" decals on either side of the hood, and a bit on the bottom left part of the hatch on the inside. The fender is the worst, because it's all deep in there, I think... the paint is still on, but it's separating. Likewise, the hatch rust has gone about halfway through (visible on the inside--the light covers the barely noticeable bubbles on the outside).
So far, I've used some stuff called Ospho, which supposedly chemically bonds with the rust and neutralizes the oxidization. Then, you're supposed to go from there with whatever methods you deem necessary. My problem is, what should I do?! I've looked at simply replacing the fender, because it'll need to be in a few years, but I had a hell of a time trying to take the fender off my parts car--all those spot welds really didn't want to come off and I was cursing (for once) the Swedish build.. why didn't it just unbolt like on our 86 4runner?? Anyway, I know that it's labor intensive and that I probably won't be able to do it without destroying the replacement AND the old one.
So what do people have for suggestions? This is my first car and I'm not really sure what the best thing to do is... should I grind out my fender and fill it in with bondo? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
