Before you tear into anything I would recommend a couple simple checks. You will need an assistant. Open the hood. Standing on the right side of the car (USA passenger side) look between the engine and the firewall way down. There is a shaft that runs between the firewall and transmission, this is the selector rod. Have your assistant shift through each gear while you observe the rod in action, there is a bushing on it which is known to fail and create this type of condition. It will be quite obvious if this bushing has torn. You should also be able to tell whether the shifter or transmission is the cause of the missing gear by observing the rod in action.
If you wind up deciding its the shifter, try the simple fix first: pull up the gearshift boot, you will see three bolts at the base of the shifter, remove each one (carefully it is easy to drop them inside the console) when all three are out the whole shifter can be lifted out from the shifter housing. Most of the shifter bushings are accessable from here. If one is broken you will see it right away. Not necessary to remove the entire shifter housing unless the very bottom bushing/plate has broken (believe me you do not want to do this its a lot of work and requires a special tool). New bushings are still available from the dealer. Good luck.
