'92 900T Auto. I just had this done @ CarToys:
- Pioneer Premier DEH-P330 CD Receiver in main dash
-- paid $179, including install
- Pioneer CDS-P4000 CD slave unit/graphic display in bottom slot
-- paid $179, including install
-- has very nice graphic display (defeatable)
-- fully controlled from main unit (like a changer would be)
- JL Audio 4" coaxial in front dash
-- paid $100/pair, drop in replacement, and solved rattle in there
-- install extra; worth it
-- soft dome tweeters have 'soft' highs unlike metal dome others
- JL Audio 4" coaxial (matching pair) in rear shelf (3Door hatch)
-- paid $100 again, plus $20 to make MDF 4X10 adapters + install
CarTous quoted $250 to make a fully custom fiberglass molded box to fit into the cavity that is on the right hand side (as you stand back there and look in the open hatch) under the shelf. The box would fit the space completely, fully, and be covered with a matching cloth. Bottom floor would clear the box; no cutting required.
That plus woofer (prob. 8" JL Audio) plus amplification (prob. 250w x 2 Alpine) plus install of it all (amp under seat, cabling runs, etc.) should be around $800.
How does it look? Professional and correct. The head unit is sunken into the dash such that the face plate is flush. The edges curve into the dash a bit, so you lose that totally flat face look, but it works. The bottom slave unit looks like it belongs there, with a very clean, flush finish. The dancing semi-circle display has a nice 'wow' factor.
How does it sound? Real good. The 4" coaxials have no bottom end, as you expect, but they do sound natural, clean and bright without being WAY bright like some of the metal dome versions were (Alpine, MB Quart). The pioneer deck is very flexable, with a subwoofer output and a high pass filter you can program in-line. Overall, a very nice improvement over stock without blowing a load on gear.
