85's - bad wire insulation - falls to pieces and causes shorts - hard to see cause it happens inside the harnesses. My 85T has 180k and the wires are taped up.
86's - my 86T has some wire deterioration, but not as much as the 85. Best car I ever owned. Low miles-96K, solid driver anyhow.
89's - consumer reports says don't buy one - electrical problematic. Don't know first hand cause I never owned one.
Ask owner important questions on any 5sp - rebuilt trans is a major plus for any year as well as major motor work. Stay away from automatics. I think the newer ones are more dependable, but still dogs.
I'm sure you'll get more replies on this one.
