I've owned Saabs from MY1978 to 1990 except '81 and '89. Of them all, I think '84 was the best year for the 8vT, and '86 and '90 tie for best 16v. The '86s have the old-style brakes and LH 2.2, whereas the '90s have the later brakes and LH 2.4... the downside is they have 1st Gen ABS which is not the best nor most reliable. I would personally avoid '85 and '88 - '85s have wiring problems and '88s seem to have all sorts of problems. That said, finding an '85 with bad wiring could be a great buy if you've got good access to parts - swapping wiring harnesses is a weekend affair and not all that bad; with '88s once they get fixed they tend to stay fixed.
