ABS & windshield washers...kinda long

I was just fixing my washers, neither side worked. I discovered the 'clog' or break was at the bent plastic part that connects the main hose on the hood to the small hose that goes to the outer jets. Anyone know WHY that 90 degree bent plastic thing is even there? Is there some sort of valve inside this little bugger? I just removed it and hooked the hose to the jet, works fine now. Just wondering.
Also, this is my first car with ABS (90 900S 5spd). Anyone know how to tell if the ABS is working? I slammed on the brakes to test and the car skidded and swerved a bit, then didn't and stopped. There was no brake pedal pulsing though (I remember years ago testing the ABS on a MB 300E and got lots of pedal feedback). BTW, my ABS and brake fluid lights come on when I start the car and go off 15-30 seconds later.
