Yes, the word is 205/45 don't rub. However, there are other ways to manage the rubbing problem, allowing you to run 205/50/16's, which won't appreciably affect your speedo reading, and may be a bit more comfortable. Also, some have said that the 45's look small in the wheelwells...
Option 1. Replace the rubber shims on the rear springs with some off of a convertible, which are thicker (there may be only certain years you can use - search this board & the perf. board for more info).
Option 2. You can also change the position of the axle. Following are instructions I received from Brad @ George's Imports:
"When the SPG came out in 1985 it was intended to come with 16" wheel but production failed to move the rear axle forward 10mm. All I do is slot the front lower mount by 0.400 inches and length the trailing arm by 0.400 inches. That moves the rear axle forward. You might look at just turning the lower control arm mount at the body around and see what that does."
Admittedly, I have tried neither of these methods, but would be more inclined to try the conv. shims before trying to move the axle. BTW, I have SPG springs and 205/50/16's with occasional rubbing, but don't often have people in the back seat.
Someone reading this can hopefully supply first-hand experience re: these mods.
